An expungement letter is a legal document that asks for your criminal record to be erased.
The first step is to identify the charges you want to expunge. Find out what you were charged with by looking at court records, or by contacting your attorney. If you don’t have an attorney, you can contact your local court clerk and ask them to help you find out what was on your record. Once you know what was charged against you, write down all of the charges on a piece of paper and add the date they happened.
Next, write a short explanation about why the charges should be expunged from your record. Your explanation should explain why these particular charges are not relevant anymore and how they could affect your ability to get a job or housing if they were still on file as part of your record. You should also explain how long it has been since these events occurred and how much time has passed since then (e.g., “It has been two years since I was arrested for possession”).
Lastly, sign and date the letter and include any relevant documents with it (e.g., police reports). Mail it certified mail so that there is proof that it was received by the appropriate authorities!
